В 1683 году Вене приходилось очень несладко под натиском турок, которые уже несколько месяцев осаждали город. Так как венцы все-таки были не готовы сдаваться, турки решили пойти на крайние меры и устроить подкоп под стеной города, чтобы проникнуть в него незаметно.
Однако им помешали пекари. Люди этой профессии работают, когда все остальные еще спят, чтобы к утру приготовить свежую выпечку.
Так вот, работая ночью, некоторые пекари услышали странные звуки турецких копателей и предупредили власти города. Последние успели предпринять меры и предотвратить неожиданный захват.
А тут и подкрепление из Польши подошло, Вена была спасена.

Те самые пекари на радостях испекли булочки в виде полумесяцев – таких, какие они видели на турецких флагах.

А круассанами эти булочки стали только в 1770 году. Когда Мария Антуаннета, 15-летняя австрийская принцесса, приехала в Париж, чтобы выйти замуж за Людовика XVI.
В честь своей новой королевы парижские булочники испекли «круассаны» («месяц» по-французски), да так круассаны и прижились во Франции.
